Top 5 Furniture Stores in Cape Town Cecile & Boyd

Furniture shopping in Cape Town is one of the most exciting parts about moving abroad for me. It’s also one of the most challenging experiences I’ve ever had design-wise.

No matter where we live, we all struggle with finding the best resources, and making the right decisions (yes, even Interiors Designers struggle!). Moving to a new city, or rather-  to a new COUNTRY, I expected to be overwhelmed with the amount of stores I would have to sift through in order to make the right calls. And I was game for the challenge!

I got my tote bag ready, my new measuring tape in centimeters (good bye inches! I miss you terribly!) and headed off into the Gardens District of Cape Town where many design store reside. Turns out, I had no reason to be overwhelmed at all.

The options here are very limited compared to the States. South Africa is a small country with strict trade laws designed to help it’s citizens prosper. This is not to say there’s not a great design scene here. In fact, it’s the opposite.

Cape Town’s design scene is bustling with amazing beautiful modern designers who in general seem to favor the muted tones and bright whites us Californians/NYC peeps love so much. So in some ways, I was totally used to this vibe but I was looking to do something different.

I already did the sleek white and crisp look in NYC. It’s so nice and fresh but I just moved to Africa! I wanted some greens and nature vibes layered in. (More on the critical importance of layering in future posts).

I wanted to create a space with a variety of textures, and colors that looked collected and organic. (I’ll eventually do a Home Tour of our place with great detail but it’s only been 5 months and I’m just not done yet!) Dave is constantly wanting to have friends over and I keep begging him off! I refuse to let anyone see my work half finished. I just like my home to feel complete before I share it. Is anyone else with me here on my crazy OCD?! (Please say yes.)

For months I scoured every single design store in Cape Town. I met so many awesome local South Africans who taught me about how they design here, how they source, where they go on shopping trips, etc. Although sources are limited compared to what I am used to in the US, I ended up falling in love with the stores we have here. Instead of looking back, I looked forward and used this as a challenge to see how I can elevate my home’s design vibe with fewer sources.

Here are the Top 5 Furniture Stores in Cape Town that I absolutely love and use!

#5: Pezula Interiors

Pezula Interiors is totally killing it in that contemporary- African-organic vibe! They have so many pieces there that I want, which is why they’ve made my list at #5.  Most of their furniture is custom made so if you’re not into lead times (who the hell is?) then you can focus more on their baskets, table lamps, art and their gorgeously curated collection of art books. Art books are EVERYTHING when it comes to accessorizing. Unfortunately, they are quite pricey (roughly $100, R1200) but each one you buy is an investment in your home. You keep them forever and no matter where you move, trust me- you’ll use it again. I purchased the Vogue Living and Around that Time – such classics. {Editors note: WTF? $200 on 2 books we’ll never even open?!} But I also purchased my dining chairs from them too! They’re very mid century in color and shape and the legs are distressed black wood, a method that is unlike I’ve ever seen.

#4: Wunders

Wunders is truly is a wonder (see what I did there? ;)). Those amazing mod lamps you’re staring at above – we snagged them! This store was such a surprise to me. It’s online presence versus in-store is night and day. Just please save yourself the time and don’t even try to look at it online. Pop in if you’re in the De Waterkant area and have a look. They have a variety of African and contemporary styles that are lovely. And the owner does a fab job of choosing the best fabrics that are on trend but also classic. Price points range from mid to high.

#3: La Grange Interiors

La Grange Interiors is located in the heart of Woodstock, a grungy but hip and up and coming area of Cape Town. Dave and I love to pop in after a Saturday morning stroll at the Old Biscuit Mill. La Grange also has a way striking that modern meets African balance. I find their lighting and tables to be the highlights of their products, which is why it’s one of the best stores in Cape Town. We’ve purchased a few lamps, and two brass Moroccan style tables from here. It’s so fun to peruse around as the store is staged very well.

#2: Weylandts

Top 5 Furniture Stores in Cape Town Weylandts

Welcome to the holy grail of furniture stores in South Africa: Weylandts (cue the song “Hallelujah”). It’s like Restoration Hardware meets HD Buttercup. Pretty much two of my favorite stores in the states. The interiors are beautiful, industrial and inspiring. You cannot leave there without wanting to buy at least 5 things. I dare you to try! They also have the cutest café built into it. During the first month of living here, I spent hours sipping flat whites and dreaming up our home from there. It was also a nice way to interact with people too since I was alone all day. I purchased our sofa, dining table, and master bed there. Such quality products and a really helpful staff. Price point is high for most things.

#1: Cecile & Boyd

I have to take a deep breath before I talk about Cecile & Boyd. I have never walked into such a breathtaking and inspiring space that has made me want to abandon all my of ideas and start over completely. Once I come up with my vision, I  execute on it like the design dictator that I am. But, this 4 story home set in the hills of the Gardens, is used as the showroom and decorated with the most unique blend of vintage-modern pieces that had me swooning. As you walk around, it feels like you’ve sneaked into some fabulous world travelers home.Top 5 Furniture Stores in Cape Town Cecile & Boyd

It’s a marriage of modern and vintage, and African and Western. Upon arriving, you walk into a serene garden with a rock-path leading you inside, where you are greeted warmly and asked if you would like a cappuccino while you shop. (Um yes, I would.) Drinking our hot and delicious coffees while we roamed around is just the best way to spend a Saturday. Even Dave enjoyed it! If you’re looking for special pieces that give you that feeling, go to Cecile & Boyd. They don’t disappoint. I rated them as the top furniture store in Cape Town because they are the top in every way: Quality of product, efficiency of staff, and presentation like no other. We’ve purchased several lamps, accent chairs and so many accessories I can hardly keep track.
