Wine Tasting in South Africa Series Delaire Graff Estate

Recently, we continued our Wine Tasting in South Africa series with a trip out to Stellenbosch, South Africa, where we visited the spectacular Delaire Graff Estate.

Delaire Graff Estate is an absolutely breathtaking state of art designed winery in South Africa’s wine region Stellenbosch. Driving to Stellenbosch from Cape Town is a meager 45 minutes. That’s how long it takes to get anywhere in LA. Anywhere.

This still blows me away every weekend when we explore. Along the route, one generally sees farmland, lots of vineyards of course, and well paved roads with very few cars. It’s peaceful and easy ride. As we pulled into Delaire Graff, my jaw dropped. Goodbye rural farmlands, and helloooo to Downton Abbey meets modern day African vineyard!

As soon as we entered the gates, I was sold. No need to taste the wine- this will do, thanks. (Just kidding – I definitely tasted the wine)

We’ve been quite a few wineries by now (not alcoholics, just design addicts over here) and still I couldn’t believe the entrance to Delaire (see above pic for what I mean- it’s insanely elaborate!). The entrance defines true escapism and fantasy with it’s lush botanical gardens and fascinating art sculptures inviting you in.

Taken right before you enter the winery.

We parked pretty high on a hill and made our way down to the grand lobby entrance of Delaire Graff (ladies easy on the heels for wine tasting in South Africa- wedges or flats will do).

We chose to pass this gorgeous room pictured above and opt for the outdoor tranquil terrace. It was a beautiful warm day, and we wanted to taste their rose’s and whites. The crisp white wine complimented the breezy vibe and added to the ambiance well (quick tip: wine tasting on the terrace isn’t as gasp-worthy as the restaurant and interior lounge view…it’s a little tucked to the side, but still quite charming).

Floor to ceiling windows- my favorite. Taken inside the lobby area.

As we settled into tasting mode with our pourer going through the history of the wine, I was already mentally planning to return with friends for lunch at their restaurant – no doubt the highlight of the venue with it’s incredible view and great reputation for excellent food.

The winery is open for wine tastings daily from 10am-5:30 pm. Cost for wine tasting is roughly $3 per person and it includes 4-6 tastings (and they are very generous pourers here in South Africa).  I would definitely book in advance as we had to wait a bit, not that we minded, and obviously for good reason, Delaire Graff is an amazing wine tasting experience in South Africa. If you’re planning to do a few wineries, add this to your top of the list to begin.
